Services

Puzzle Piece Wellness sees clients both in-person in San Luis Obispo County, California, and remotely.* We offer self-care coaching, nutrition counseling, and personal training--a la carte, or all at once! Our unique private practice specializes in incorporating self-care activities into your time with us, but we are also happy to accommodate a preference for simpler, more traditional session formats. Check out the descriptions of our services below and see if what we do resonates with you. If so, you can reach out on our Contact page to schedule a free 20-minute consulation, or sign up for e-mails to stay informed of future offerings. We look forward to hearing from you!

*Please note that remote nutrition services may be limited by state-specific licensure requirements for Registered Dietitians. If you reside outside of California and are interested in nutrition counseling, please include this information when you reach out to us so we can evaluate whether your specific state allows us to provide you with these services.

What We Offer

Self-Care Coaching

It all starts here. Puzzle Piece Wellness helps you look at the big picture and examine all the intersecting domains of your life. Together, we'll explore what matters most to you, and how self-care can both support and integrate with your highest priorities. We'll assess your current resources and how best to allocate them; we'll set values-based goals and strategize for your success. Collectively, these conversations set the stage for meaingful, enduring behavior change, all in service of a purpose-driven life.

Nutrition Counseling

At Puzzle Piece Wellness, nutrition counseling focuses on the relationship you have with food—how to listen to and honor your body’s needs, and how to navigate practical barriers to good nutrition. Our non-diet, weight-neutral, back-to-basics approach is informed by years of experience working in eating disorder treatment. We believe all bodies deserve, and require, both the sensory pleasures of delicious food and the sound nutrition found in balanced meals. With personalized recommendations plus one-on-one meal planning, cooking lessons, mindful meals, and grocery shopping support, we make it possible for you to be nourished without obsessing over food.

Personal Training

Puzzle Piece Wellness offers personal training for functional fitness, so you have the strength you need to fully engage with life. From mindful walks outside to full-body resistance training workouts at the gym, we help you get moving in whatever way works best for you. ·Our gentle approach is ideal for those with previous negative experiences with exercise. We strive to help you rediscover the joys, challenges, and comforts of movement so you can feel confident and capable in your body.

What We DON'T Offer

Psychotherapy

Coaching can help you take a closer look at how well, or poorly, your choices align with your values, and it can support you in making changes you'll be proud of so you can reach the goals that matter to you. But it’s not a substitute for the emotional processing work that happens in psychotherapy. Puzzle Piece Wellness encourages all of our clients to work concurrently with a licensed psychotherapist who can address these needs, and we are happy to coordinate care with your therapist with your consent. You can find a therapist on the Psychology Today website, which allows you to filter by many things, including insurance coverage.

Complex Medical Nutrition Therapy

Good nutrition can help you better manage blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood lipids (like cholesterol or triglycerides), normalize bowel function, support gains or retention of muscle mass and bone density, improve mental health, and more. Nutrition can also be used to treat medical conditions and diseases--this is known as Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), and should only be practiced by Registered Dietitians/Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDs/RDNs). While we are proud to be founded by an RD, MNT is not our passion nor our area of expertise. For nutritional management of complex medical concerns such as insulin-dependent diabetes, severe gastrointestinal distress, dysphagia, kidney or liver disease, etc., we encourage you to seek out an RD/RDN who has extensive experience with your particular diagnosis. If you are working with another RD/RDN, we can coordinate care with your consent, and we can support you in putting their recommendations into practice with our activity-based sessions.

Individuals struggling with eating disorders (EDs) will be considered on a case-by-case basis. We typically refer out potential ED clients who require significant weight restoration, who are experiencing medical complications related to malnutrition, or who are actively engaged in purging behaviors such as self-induced vomiting or abuse of laxatives or weight loss medications. Please reach out to see if your situation is a good fit for our practice. If not, we can provide referrals for compassionate ED care elsewhere.

Individuals taking prescribed GLP-1 medications will also be considered on a case-by-case basis. When working with GLP-1 clients, our focus is not weight loss, but harm reduction. We can help you eat enough to reduce the known risks of malnutrition and loss of both bone density and muscle mass on GLP-1s. Please reach out to see if your situation is a good match for our practice. If not, we can provide referrals to other dietitians who may be better able to address your needs.

Physical Therapy

Personal training can help you bulild strength and stamina, improve flexibility and balance, stay active as you age, contribute positively to mental health, and more. But you may need to see a physical therapist first if you are injured, in pain, recovering from surgery, or struggling with everyday tasks. Once you are cleared for personal training, we can program workouts within the parameters set by your physical therapist--past or present--to ensure a safe exercise experience. Please ask your primary care physician about a physical therapy referral if you think you might benefit from physical therapy.

Pricing

We offer free 20-minute consultations to help you decide if you'd like to work with us. Please reach out through our Contact page to request a consultation.

All of our services, both in-person and remote, are priced at the following single-session rates. This pricing structure is intended to allow for and prioritize both deeper conversations and activity-based session formats--from a la carte adventures such as hiking or cooking, all the way up to full-day private retreats. Discounted, package pricing is available for clients who would like to meet more than once per week (for example, biweekly or triweekly personal training clients, or clients who would like to separate coaching sessions from activity-based sessions). Note that for in-person sessions outside of our standard operating area (San Luis Obispo and Five Cities), additional fees for drive time may apply.

Your first session with us will be scheduled for at least 2 hours, to allow sufficient time to truly hear your story and lay the groundwork for what is to come. Follow-up session times are up to you. If you want traditional one-hour, discussion-based sessions, we're happy to provide them. If you want an entire day of guided self-care reflection and skill-building, we're in!

We do not accept insurance, nor do we provide superbills, as our diverse, integrated services extend beyond the realm of billable healthcare. Instead, we reserve a limited number of sliding scale slots for clients experiencing significant financial hardship. If you feel that our services would be valuable to you, we encourage you to reach out for an initial consultation even if our fees seem out of reach. We are happy to discuss your budget and the possibility of sliding scale.
